California Mortgage Relief Program Now Accepting Applications

Post Date: City of Lafayette, 01/06/2022 11:28 AM

California homeowners who have fallen behind on their housing payments due to pandemic-related financial hardship can now apply for a grant from the state to repay missed mortgage payments or reverse mortgage arrearages during the COVID-19 pandemic. Information on eligibility requirements and how to apply are now available at CaMortgageRelief.org.

Past due housing payments will be covered in full – up to a maximum of $80,000 per household – with a direct payment to the homeowner’s mortgage servicer.  Funding is provided as a one-time grant and the funds do not need to be repaid.

Applicants are required to upload various documents to determine eligibility, including mortgage statements, bank statements, utility bills, and income documentation (i.e. paystubs, tax returns, or unemployment documents). In certain situations, additional information may be required.

Eligibility:

Eligible applicants must be at or below 100% of their county’s Area Median Income, own a single-family home, condo or permanently affixed manufactured home and have faced a pandemic-related financial hardship between January 21, 2020, and December 27, 2021, and also meet at least one of the following qualifications:

  • Receiving public assistance;
  • Severely housing burdened; or
  • Have no alternative mortgage workout options through your mortgage servicer.

100% of the Area Median Income (AMI) for Contra Costa County

  • For a household size of 1 is $95,900
  • For a household size of 2 is $109,600
  • For a household size of 4 is $137,000

California is receiving $1 billion in mortgage relief funds from the American Rescue Plan Act’s Homeowner Assistance Fund. The California Mortgage Relief Program is being provided to homeowners through the CalHFA Homeowner Relief Corporation as part of the state’s Housing is Key initiative.

CA COVID-19 Rent Relief Program Updates

As of June 28, 2021, California critical eviction protections have been extended through September 30, 2021 to help keep California families in their homes. Additionally, the CA COVID-19 Rent Relief program now covers 100% of unpaid and future rent and utilities for income-eligible renters and their landlords who have been impacted by the pandemic. Those who have already applied and received payment will receive additional funds to reach 100% compensation.

Interested landlords and renters can check eligibility and apply at HousingIsKey.com or by calling 833-430-2122. Applicants may qualify regardless of immigration status and will not be required to show proof of citizenship. All application information is kept private and will not be shared. Assistance from the CA COVID-19 Rent Relief program does not count as earned income for renters, and will not interfere with eligibility for any other state benefit assistance programs.
