ABOUT

Lafayette’s Community Information & Emergency Radio Station is on the Air

Thanks to the dedicated work of the PD’s John Cornell and Information Station Specialists Technician Tom Coviak, we are very happy to report that the City of Lafayette’s Community Information and Emergency AM Radio Station is on the air.

The station, which is housed at the Police Department, broadcasts 24/7 on 1670 AM. It can be heard for about a 6- to 7-mile radius from the PD and covers all of the City of Lafayette, portions of Moraga, Orinda, Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek. Field tests indicate that the station’s signal is very good in most areas.

You may recall that the idea for the City’s Emergency Alert Station grew out of a discussion of how best to communicate vital information during wildfires and power outages when cell phones and the internet may not be working. Everybody has access to an AM radio – they should. The station will broadcast emergency information in times of disaster, wildfires, or PG&E power outages. During non-emergencies, the Lafayette Radio will carry general city information and news, details on events and programs, and general visitor information about Lafayette.

Presently the station is broadcasting weather alert messages, a general message about information radio stations, The Lafayette Business Report, and a station ID at the top and bottom of each hour. We’ll be producing more programming soon. For you radio fans out there, the station’s FCC-designated call sign is WRHU776. Please tune your AM radios to 1670 and let our Communications Analyst Jeff Heyman know how the station sounds at your location, both during the day and at night. If you do not have an AM radio (get one now!), you can also can listen to the Lafayette Radio’s live stream at http://bit.ly/LafayetteRadio1670AM.
